stonecroft - the shingle house award winning home

I was absolutely thrilled to photograph the Homebuilding & Renovating, Grand Designs & riba Home of the Year award 2025, and even more excited to celebrate a front cover. This incredible project began as a tired mid-century bungalow in Bath and has been transformed into a breathtaking, shingle-clad, eco-conscious family home. Perched on a peaceful wooded hillside with sweeping views across Bath and out to the Severn Estuary, it’s no surprise the judges were instantly captivated.

Nestled in the historic city of Bath, Stonecroft is a striking blend of contemporary design and timeless craftsmanship. Known as the Shingle House, its exterior is clad in warm, textured timber shingles nods to traditional forms while embracing modern architectural lines. Inside, the house is a study in light, space, and subtle materiality, where carefully considered proportions create a sense of calm and flow throughout.

Every detail reflects the owners’ vision for a home that is at once elegant, functional and deeply personal. Natural materials, muted palettes and bespoke finishes are layered with quiet sophistication, allowing the architecture itself to take centre stage. The result is a home that balances presence with intimacy, a contemporary retreat that still feels grounded in its historic surroundings.
